Standstill

Something is standing still

around or in me,

something that is or could be

the world with its last heaven

or even the end of my will

or my soul.

For the first time, if ever at all,

my mind now follows my body asleep

and knows the name

of the water deep

now that all water is still

and seems no more to be water

just as my will unafraid of tears

is not my will - is not my birth.

And I can see the worth

of things, the size

and purpose of each star

and of man's earth

in the skies,

and my own will

a useful, useless speck apart

and very far.

I cannot tell

what all this is

and what I am -

heartbeat or sham,

life of another or will

of my own.

Something, I feel, if not lost yet,

is standing still.

Qualcosa ristagna

attorno a me o in me,

qualcosa che è forse

il mondo col suo cielo terminale

o la fine della mia volontà

o il mio soffio vitale.

Ora, e mai è stato,

la mente segue il corpo addormentato

e sa il nome

dell'acqua profonda

ora che ristagna e non sembra

più acqua proprio come

il mio volere impavido di pianto

non è più il mio - non è me stesso.

Vedo adesso il valore

delle cose, la misura

e lo scopo d'ogni stella

e della terra

di umana creatura nel vuoto,

e il mio essere,

utile inutile punto a sé stante

remoto.

Non discerno

che cos'è tutto questo

che cosa io sono -

palpito o parvenza,

vita altrui o volere

mio proprio.

Qualcosa, avverto, se già non è persa,

ancora ristà.
